Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or OCD is a mental health condition where someone experiences unwanted, intrusive thoughts and urges to perform repetitive behaviors to reduce their anxiety. People are often aware that their thoughts and behaviors do not make sense, but they find it very difficult, with interruption in daily life.
Examples of obsessions:
- Fear of harming someone
- Unpleasant sexual images
- Feeling things should be “just right”
Examples of compulsions:
- Excessive counting
- Excessive checking
- Hand washing or other contamination rituals
- Reassurance seeking
Treatment typically includes medication and talk therapy. Therapy specifically incorporates cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) techniques and exposure and response therapy (ERT) techniques. During your initial consultation, Dr. Turner will conduct an assessment for OCD. If indicated, she will prescribe medications to improve your symptoms, and refer you to a psychologist that specializes in CBT and ERT therapy.
